Progress Update, Week of August 30, 2021

During the week of August 30 the Gowanus Remediation Team began demobilizing the pipe pile barge configuration at the Carroll Street bridge.

The Carroll Street Bridge has been closed to roadway and sidewalk traffic to support operations on the EPA mandated remediation of the Gowanus Canal. Currently evaluation of the bridge is underway before it is reopened to traffic. NYC DOT, EPA and the Gowanus Remediation Team will provide updates as this process continues.

While the Carroll Street Bridge is closed, please plan to use an alternative route to cross the canal. The suggested detour is via Union Street. Please be advised that all bridges along the canal (Hamilton Ave., 9th St., 3rd St., Carroll St., and Union St.) are subject to intermittent openings while work is ongoing to facilitate access for construction vessels.

Demobilizing the barge configuration will last for several weeks and will be followed by mobilization for In Situ Stabilization (ISS).

This week crews prepared for forecasted inclement weather from the remnants of Hurricane Ida. Materials and equipment were carefully inspected and made storm ready.

Photos of construction activities are provided below.
