During the week of June 28 the Gowanus Remediation Team continued with ongoing pile driving operations. Pipe piles are being installed at the Carroll Street bridge to create bulkheads that will support the bridge abutments during future phases of dredging.
Pipe piles have been installed at the southwest and southeast corners of the Carroll Street bridge. Monopiles, freestanding large diameter pilings, were installed off the southern corners of the bridge to protect the newly installed pipe pile bulkheads.
With installation complete on the south side of the bridge our crews began to reconfigure the work barge positioning around the Carroll Street bridge. This new configuration will be necessary for our equipment to access the canal-facing sides of the bridge abutments to continue with pipe pile installation. The reconfiguration process is expected to be completed by late July, 2021.
Debris was removed on the west side of the canal near Degraw Street along the bank of the canal. Further debris removal is expected to take place near Douglass Street on the west side of the canal over the coming weeks.
Additional supporting activities continued at the Union Street Bridge to prepare for upcoming replacement of submarine cables that are a part of the bridge’s control system.
