Progress Update, Week of October 25, 2021

During the week of October 25 the Gowanus Remediation Team (GRT) continued the demonstration of In Situ Stabilization (ISS). ISS is a remediation process by which contaminants are rendered immobile through reactions with stabilizing compounds mixed directly into the soil or sediment. The demonstration involves stabilization of a small target area, followed by analysis of the results and is expected to be completed in Winter 2021.

Sediment removal near the Union Street Bridge remains ongoing. Sediment is being removed using a vacuum truck staged on the roadway.

The GRT continued preparing for sheet pile bulkheads installation along the west side of the Canal near Degraw Street. Bulkhead installation is expected to begin in late November.
