2021 Progress Updates

Progress Update, Week of November 1, 2021

During the week of November 1, the Gowanus Remediation Team (GRT) completed sediment removal at the Union Street Bridge. Sediment was removed using a vacuum truck staged on the roadway.

The demonstration testing for In-Situ Stabilization (ISS) was completed and the associated equipment was demobilized. ISS is scheduled to resume within RTA1 in December.

The GRT began mobilizing equipment in preparation for sheet pile bulkhead installation work near the head of the canal.

Progress Update, Week of November 8, 2021

During the week of November 8, the Gowanus Remediation Team (GRT) continued mobilizing equipment and materials in preparation for sheet pile bulkhead installation work near the head of the canal.

Pipe pile cutting continued at the Carroll Street Bridge.  Pipe piles that were installed within the navigational channel are being cut to an appropriate height.

Analysis of the In-Situ Stabilization (ISS) demonstration test results is ongoing.

Progress Update, Week of November 15, 2021

During the week of November 15, the Gowanus Remediation Team began installing sheet pile bulkheads near the head of the canal.

Pipe pile cutting continued at the Carroll Street Bridge.  Pipe piles that were installed within the navigational channel are being cut to an appropriate height.

Analysis of the In-Situ Stabilization (ISS) demonstration test results is ongoing. Mobilization for full scale ISS will begin over the coming weeks.

Progress Update, Week of November 22, 2021

During the week of November 22, the Gowanus Remediation Team continued sheet pile bulkhead installation work near the head of the canal. Sheet piles were prepared for installation.

Pipe pile cutting at the Carroll Street Bridge was completed. Pipe piles that were installed within the navigational channel were cut to an appropriate height.

Analysis of the In-Situ Stabilization (ISS) demonstration test results remains ongoing. Mobilization for full scale ISS will begin over the coming weeks.

Progress Update, Week of November 29, 2021

During the week of November 29, the Gowanus Remediation Team continued sheet pile bulkhead installation work near the head of the canal. Sheet piles were installed at the head of the canal near Butler street. Workers cut installed sheet piles as needed to expose combined sewer overflow outfalls.

Analysis of the In-Situ Stabilization (ISS) demonstration test results were concluded this week. Crews began mobilizing for commencing full ISS production. Next week ISS will begin for RTA-1.

Progress Update, Week of December 6, 2021

During the week of December 6, the Gowanus Remediation Team continued sheet pile bulkhead installation at the head of the canal near Butler Street. Sheet piles were installed along the west side of the canal.

Full production In-Situ Stabilization (ISS) began this week. ISS was conducted within RTA-1, including at the Carroll Street Bridge. Mobilization for a second ISS production barge group is ongoing.

Progress Update, Week of December 13, 2021

During the week of December 13, the Gowanus Remediation Team continued In-Situ Stabilization (ISS) within RTA-1. Mobilization for a second ISS production barge group is ongoing.

Work continued on the sheet pile bulkhead installation at the head of the canal. Recently installed sheet piles were cut to an appropriate height and sealed.

During the week of December 20, the Gowanus Remediation Team continued  In-Situ Stabilization (ISS) within RTA-1. Mobilization for a second ISS production barge group is ongoing.

Work continued on the sheet pile bulkhead installation at the head of the canal. Recently installed sheet piles were cut to an appropriate height and sealed.

Progress Update, Week of December 27, 2021

During the week of December 27, the Gowanus Remediation Team continued In-Situ Stabilization (ISS) along the Bond Street Promenade.

Work continued on the sheet pile bulkhead installation at the head of the canal. Recently installed sheet piles were cut to an appropriate height and sealed.

Next week, site clearing will begin at the former Turning Basin 1 (TB1). The filled-in turning basin will be excavated as a part of the cleanup.
