2021 Progress Updates

Progress Update, Week of June 21, 2021

During the week of June 21 the Gowanus Remediation Team continued with ongoing pile driving operations.

Crews installed pipe piles at the southeast and southwest corners of the Carroll Street bridge. Pipe piles are being installed at the Carroll Street bridge to create bulkheads that will support the bridge abutments during future phases of dredging.

While pile driving operations are underway there may be elevated levels of noise or vibrations produced by the associated equipment. Our crews continue to monitor project related noise and vibrations in real time to ensure that all work is completed safely.

Our crews continue to perform a variety of supporting activities to facilitate the pile driving operations including installing scaffolding, delivering materials, testing equipment, and maneuvering vessels.

Additional supporting activities continued at the Union Street bridge to prepare for upcoming replacement of submarine cables that are a part of the bridge’s control system.

Looking ahead, next week our crews will begin to reconfigure the work barge positioning around the Carroll Street bridge. This new configuration will be necessary for our equipment to access the canal-facing sides of the bridge abutments. The reconfiguration process will last for approximately three weeks.

Additional supporting activities will be conducted next week to remove debris that are on the west side of the Canal, north of Union Street.

Starting next week crews will begin debris removal and bulkhead replacement on the western bank of the canal near Degraw Street. Further debris removal and bulkhead replacement is expected to take place on the west side of the canal near Douglass Street over the coming weeks.

Pipe piles have been installed at the southwest and southeast corners of the Carroll Street bridge. Monopiles, freestanding large diameter pilings, were installed off the southern corners of the bridge to protect the newly installed pipe pile bulkheads.

With installation complete on the south side of the bridge our crews began to reconfigure the work barge positioning around the Carroll Street bridge. This new configuration will be necessary for our equipment to access the canal-facing sides of the bridge abutments to continue with pipe pile installation. The reconfiguration process is expected to be completed by late July, 2021.

Debris was removed on the west side of the canal near Degraw Street along the bank of the canal. Further debris removal is expected to take place near Douglass Street on the west side of the canal over the coming weeks.

Additional supporting activities continued at the Union Street Bridge to prepare for upcoming replacement of submarine cables that are a part of the bridge’s control system.

Progress Update, Week of July 5, 2021

During the week of July 5 the Gowanus Remediation Team continued repositioning the work barges around the Carroll Street bridge. This new configuration is necessary for construction equipment to access the canal-facing sides of the bridge abutments. The reconfiguration process is expected to be completed by late July.

Once the new configuration has been completed pipe pile installation will continue. Pipe piles are being installed at the Carroll Street bridge to create bulkheads that will support the bridge abutments during future phases of dredging.

Debris removal remains ongoing at the west side of the canal near Douglass Street. Debris removal will continue over the coming weeks.

Progress Update, Week of June 14, 2021

During the week of June 14 the Gowanus Remediation Team continued with ongoing pile driving operations.

Crews completed pipe pile installation at Turning Basin 1 (TB-1), located between 3rd Street and Carroll Street. Pipe piles were installed at TB-1 to create a temporary separation wall that will support fill materials on the upland side of the canal while dredging occurs within the turning basin.

With pipe pile installation complete at TB-1, crews remobilized to continue pipe pile installation at the southeast corner of the Carroll Street Bridge. Pipe piles are being installed at the Carroll Street Bridge to create bulkheads that will support the bridge abutments during future phases of dredging.

While pile driving operations are underway there may be elevated levels of noise or vibrations produced by the associated equipment. Our crews continue to monitor project related vibrations in real time to ensure that all work is completed safely.
