Progress Update, Week of January 3rd, 2022

During the week of January 3, the Gowanus Remediation Team continued In-Situ Stabilization (ISS) near the Bond Street Promenade.

Installation and cutting of sheet pile bulkheads at the headwall of the canal was completed. This week the GRT will continue installing sealant for the new bulkheads. Next week the barges will relocate south near Degraw Street to conduct sheet pile installation at that location.

Site clearing began at the former Turning Basin 1 (TB1). Crews removed vegetation, conducted additional site surveying, and staged materials. The filled-in turning basin will be excavated as a part of the cleanup.

This week crews began removing the sound curtain fence near Union Street.

Progress Update, Week of January 10th, 2022

During the week of January 10, the Gowanus Remediation Team continued In-Situ Stabilization (ISS) near the Bond Street Promenade.

Sealing the sheet pile bulkheads at the headwall of the canal was completed. The work barges are preparing to relocate south to Degraw Street where they will continue sheet pile bulkhead installation.

Site clearing was completed at the former Turning Basin 1 (TB1). Sheet pile installation is expected to begin at TB1 over the coming weeks.

This week crews continued removing the sound curtain fence near Union Street.

Progress Update, Week of January 17th, 2022

During the week of January 17, the Gowanus Remediation Team continued In-Situ Stabilization (ISS) near the Bond Street Promenade.

GRT workers continued installing sheet piles along the western canal bank near Degraw Street. Over the coming weeks work will continue at this location to install tiebacks for the newly constructed sheet pile bulkhead. Please note, there will be a partial street closure in place on Degraw street between Bond Street and the Gowanus Canal while this work is ongoing.

At Turning Basin 1 (TB1) sheet piles were prepared for upcoming installation.

The removal of the sound curtain fence near Union Street was completed.

Progress Update, Week of January 24th, 2022

During the week of January 24, the Gowanus Remediation Team continued In-Situ Stabilization (ISS) near the Bond Street Promenade.

GRT workers completed installing sheet piles near Degraw Street. The GRT began preparing to install tiebacks for the new bulkhead. Please note, there will be a partial street closure in place on Degraw street between Bond Street and the Gowanus Canal while this work is ongoing.

At Turning Basin 1 (TB1) crews continued mobilizing for sheet pile installation and began installing sheet pile anchors. Sheet piles will be installed to create tiebacks to support the temporary pipe pile separation wall.

Progress Update, Week of January 31st, 2022

During the week of January 31, the Gowanus Remediation Team continued In-Situ Stabilization (ISS) near the Bond Street Promenade and north of the Carroll Street Bridge. Next week an excavator barge will be utilized at the north side of the Carroll Street Bridge to conduct additional probing of the sediment.

Bulkhead installation equipment was demobilized from the Degraw Street work site. Sheet piles were cut to an appropriate height. The GRT continued preparing to install tiebacks for the new bulkhead. Please note, there will be a partial street closure in place on Degraw street between Bond Street and the Gowanus Canal while this work is ongoing.

At Turning Basin 1 (TB1) sheet piles, anchor plates, and tie rods were installed at the bulkheads to tieback the temporary pipe pile separation wall. Equipment was demobilized in preparation for test pitting next week.

Progress Update, Week of February 7th, 2022

During the week of February 7 the Gowanus Remediation Team continued In-Situ Stabilization (ISS) north of the Carroll Street Bridge. Additional probing of the sediment was conducted in the vicinity to identify possible obstructions.

At Degraw Street the GRT mobilized equipment and continued preparing the site to install tiebacks. Sheet piles were cut to size and fitted with spacer plates and tieback guides. Please note, there will be a partial street closure in place on Degraw street between Bond Street and the Gowanus Canal while this work is ongoing.

At Turning Basin 1 (TB1) tieback installation continued. Drainage holes were cut in the temporary separation wall and tie rods were installed and tightened. Test pitting was conducted as part of the archeological monitoring program.

Progress Update, Week of February 14th, 2022

During the week of February 14 the Gowanus Remediation Team continued In-Situ Stabilization (ISS) north of the Carroll Street Bridge. Additional probing of the sediment was conducted in the vicinity to identify possible obstructions.

At Degraw Street the GRT continued mobilizing equipment and preparing the site for tieback installation. A closure sheet was installed at the bulkhead. Please note, there will be a partial street closure in place on Degraw street between Bond Street and the Gowanus Canal while this work is ongoing.

At Turning Basin 1 (TB1) tieback installation continued. Tie rods were tightened. An excavator was demobilized from the site.

Progress Update, Week of February 21st, 2022

During the week of February 21 the Gowanus Remediation Team continued In-Situ Stabilization (ISS) south of the Union Street Bridge. Additional probing of the sediment was conducted near the Carroll Street Bridge to identify possible obstructions.

Tieback installation was completed at Turning Basin 1 (TB1). The fence and gate at the edge of the site were replaced. Equipment and materials were fully demobilized.

Tieback installation began at Degraw Street. Additional equipment was delivered to the site. There will be a partial street closure in place on Degraw street between Bond Street and the Gowanus Canal while this work is ongoing.

Progress Update, Week of February 28th, 2022

During the week of February 28 the Gowanus Remediation Team continued In-Situ Stabilization (ISS) south of the Union Street Bridge.

At Degraw Street the GRT continued tieback installation. There will be a partial street closure in place on Degraw Street between Bond Street and the Gowanus Canal while this work is ongoing.

At Turning Basin 1 (TB1) tieback installation continued. Drainage holes were cut in the temporary separation wall and tie rods were installed and tightened. Test pitting was conducted as part of the archeological monitoring program.

Progress Update, Week of March 7th, 2022

During the week of March 7 the Gowanus Remediation Team (GRT) continued In-Situ Stabilization (ISS) near the Union Street Bridge.

This week remedial construction activities began at the Union Street Bridge. Mechanical restraints are being installed in preparation for additional upcoming work. The Union Street Bridge will be intermittently closed to all traffic during daytime hours, 9am – 2pm, for up to five days a week. At Degraw Street the GRT continued tieback installation. Tieback anchors were locked off. Tieback rods were trimmed as needed and sealed. A partial street closure will remain in place on Degraw Street between Bond Street and the Gowanus Canal while this work is ongoing.

Additional probing was conducted near the Carroll Street Bridge.
