2022 Progress Updates

Progress Update, Week of March 14th, 2022

During the week of March 14 the Gowanus Remediation Team (GRT) continued In-Situ Stabilization (ISS) near the Union Street Bridge.

Remedial construction activities continued at the Union Street Bridge. Mechanical restraints were installed in preparation for additional upcoming work. The Union Street Bridge will be intermittently closed to all traffic during daytime hours, 9am – 2pm, for up to five days a week. At Degraw Street the GRT continued tieback installation. Tieback anchors were locked off. Tieback rods were trimmed as needed and sealed. A partial street closure will remain in place on Degraw Street between Bond Street and the Gowanus Canal while this work is ongoing.

Progress Update, Week of March 21st, 2022

During the week of March 21 the Gowanus Remediation Team (GRT) continued In-Situ Stabilization (ISS) near the Union Street Bridge.

At Degraw Street the tieback installations were completed. Tieback equipment was demobilized. Workers began cutting drainage holes, installing a filtration system, and restoring the roadway. A partial street closure will remain in place on Degraw Street between Bond Street and the Gowanus Canal while this work is ongoing.

Crews began preparing the staging area for upcoming phase 2 dredging.

Progress Update, Week of March 28th, 2022

During the week of March 28 the Gowanus Remediation Team (GRT) continued In-Situ Stabilization (ISS). The ISS work barges were relocated to conduct ISS near the Carroll Street Bridge.

Closure sheet piles were installed at the Carroll Street Bridge.

At Degraw Street workers continued cutting drainage holes, installing a filtration system, and restoring the roadway. A partial street closure will remain in place on Degraw Street between Bond Street and the Gowanus Canal while this work is ongoing.

Crews began preparing the staging area for upcoming phase 2 dredging.

During the week of April 4 the Gowanus Remediation Team (GRT) continued In-Situ Stabilization (ISS) near the Carroll Street Bridge.

Closure sheets were installed at the head of the canal near Douglass Street.

At Degraw Street workers continued cutting drainage holes, installing a filtration system, and restoring the roadway. A partial street closure will remain in place on Degraw Street between Bond Street and the Gowanus Canal while this work is ongoing.

Crews began preparing the staging area for upcoming phase 2 dredging.

Progress Update, Week of April 11th, 2022

During the week of April 11 the Gowanus Remediation Team (GRT) conducted In-Situ Stabilization (ISS) near the Carroll Street Bridge early in the week, before temporarily suspending ISS operations in order to commence Phase 2 dredging.

Progress Update, Week of May 9th, 2022

During the week of May 2 the Gowanus Remediation Team (GRT) completed Phase 2 dredging near the Union Street Bridge. Sediment was raked following the completion of dredging activities.

At Degraw Street workers continued cutting drainage holes, installing a filtration system, and restoring the roadway. A closure sheet was installed and sealant was applied at the new bulkhead. A partial street closure will remain in place on Degraw Street between Bond Street and the Gowanus Canal while this work is ongoing.

Progress Update, Week of May 16th, 2022

During the week of May 16 the Gowanus Remediation Team (GRT) resumed In Situ Stabilization (ISS) north of Union Street.

Additional equipment and materials were mobilized in preparation for upcoming monopile installation at the Union Street Bridge.

The existing timber pilings (dolphins) at the Third Street Bridge were prepared for replacement with monopiles. Bolts and cable wrap were removed.

Work on the drainage and filtration systems at the Degraw Street bulkhead continued.
